Biography

Sofia Lucarelli is a British artist currently based in Mexico City who works in a range of media; spanning from oil painting to digital art.

Her work refers to present, day-to-day observations, particularly in Mexico City, capturing chaos and saturated colours. Patterns, motifs, and symbols are taken from iconography, such as car stickers, illustrations on walls, shop signage, and tiles.

Her work explores freedom within structure. The pride, simplicity and beauty in pattern with her ghost-like figures that don’t quite conform to their backgrounds. Her work examines the relationship between the individual and their context in its clear distinction between foreground and background.

Sofia’s work is often signed off with roses. The roses refer to the rose bush at her grandparent’s home that used to tower over her as a child. It felt magnetic and wonderful but getting too close would come with a prickly price. The symbolic resonance of these roses has evolved for Sofia, encapsulating a profound message in her body of work; the dialogue between vulnerability and self protection.
